I just recently started volunteering with the Between Friends Club, which is an organization that allows people of all ages with physical disabilities to participate in a range of activities that you and I take for granted. What if you couldn’t go catch a movie with your friends just because there is no wheelchair accessibility, or where having a cognitive disability meant you couldn’t order what you wanted to eat at a resturant? Between Friends and organizations like it ensure that a disability doesn’t limit the ability of these human beings to paticipate in society. Having this experience is making me realize that despite the differences that set us apart, we’re not all too different. As cliche as that sounds, its not until you take the time to put yourself in an unfamiliar place to fully realize it.
Give a little of yourself to the world, go out of your way to put a smile on someone’s face, and make a difference in your community any way you can. Even though the work you do may only make a little dent in making this world a little bit of a better place to live, the feeling of making someones day a little brighter is worth every minute of your time.
